Two-time breast cancer survivor brings a party to advocacy

When Pamela Weems became pregnant with her youngest son, she noticed a lump in her breast and asked her primary doctor if she should be concerned. They told her no, that it was a swollen milk gland. It would dissipate in time.
Weems went on with her life. Three years later, when former Miss Minnesota Mary Kay Sanders passed away from breast cancer, Weems was again concerned about her lump. She went back to the doctor for a mammogram.

When Pamela Weems was first diagnosed with breast cancer, one of her first thoughts was to reach out to other women. Cancer was something she had known about but she never thought it could happen to her. Today, she wants others to be aware that any woman can get breast cancer and they should get screened regularly.

Local Breast Cancer Survivor Shares Her Story
Breast cancer it not something Pamela Weems ever expected to hear come out of a doctor’s mouth.
“It never hits you until it hits home,” says Weems.
The 60-something former model, beauty consultant, and mom was diagnosed in 1997 after getting a mammogram, on a whim, at the Mall of America.
“They were offering a free gift if you go down to the sage clinic, and you get a breast exam,” she explained.
